TANAUAN MEDICAL SOCIETY

HISTORY
The Tanauan Medical Society, which consists of physicians from the city of Tanauan and the towns of Malvar, Sto. Tomas, Talisay and Laurel has been a chapter of the Batangas Medical Society from 1957 thru 1968. For some reasons, interest among the members waned and by early 1990’s physicians from these areas were either members of the Batangas Medical Society or the Lipa City Medical Society.
In 1993, under the leadership of Dr. Carlito P. Reyes, the first president, the Tanauan Medical Society was revived as a chapter of the Batangas Medical Society. With the tireless efforts of Dr. Carlito P. Reyes and Dr. Nemesia R. Platon, who was the secretary at that time and who later became the second president, the dream of becoming a component society was realized. In 1995, under the presidency of Dr. Luis Buno Jr., the Tanauan Medical Society became a component society of the Philippine Medical Association.
The society has grown from its initial 50 members to a little over 300 members today. So many things have happened in the past 25 years. The community is now more aware of our medical society as we have been involved in various socio-civic works. We have been participating in the awareness programs of the PMA, DOH, PHIC, and DENR. Our working relationship with City Health, BHW and other medical related NGOs has improved. Regular scientific lectures for the continuing medical education of its members are being conducted.
TMS has won a total of 5 Icasiano awards, 2 1st Placers last 2002-2003 under the leadership of Dr. Edwin Gonzaga and 2006-2007 during the term of Dra. Gloria Silva Velando.
It also won 2nd place during the 2003-2004 term of Dr. Eduardo Chua. It has garnered 3rd place finish last 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 during the time of Drs. Gina Nazareth and Benbenato Garcia, respectively. Perhaps, it is time for another one this year.
A lot of home grown talents have returned after post graduate training and have decided to practice in their place of birth.
